Dave Van Ronk was the concert headliner that night at McCabe’s. He was in the banjo room a couple of hours before the show and Jackson Browne and I
walked in at the same time. The two entertainers had obviously never met and since nobody spoke up I said, “Jackson Browne, Dave Van Ronk. And I’m
the Outlook reporter. How about I take some pictures?” Jackson Browne’s errand that evening concerned a song he had just recorded that he thought
Dave wrote. Dave was forced to identify the correct author of the song in question, whereupon we were treated to a short comic routine about the
downside of honesty where lost revenue was concerned. As this photo was taken they were nipping from Van Ronk’s bottle of Old Bushmill’s Irish
whiskey and becoming old friends fast.
